Aloha! Welcome to the Strand B: Place-Based Learning at Kupu Hou Academy 2014. Glad you're here!
First, let's look at the big picture for our work together:
Overarching Question: How can Place-Based Learning be used to both engage students and community partners as well as positively impact student learning?
Learning Target: I can design a place-based learning activity that integrates standards and is relevant and meaningful to my students.
Product/Goal: I will walk away with a completed draft plan of an integrated project that I can confidently continue to work on with the intention of implementation in my classroom next school year.
Day 1: 1:00 – 1:15 Intro: Aloha Circle – Herb Lee
1:15- 2:00 What is PBL PPT – Herb Lee
2:00 – 2:10 Working Break – Kapono Ciotti Stand-up hand-up pair-up Find 1-2 people you didn’t know before today and find out about what they are most looking forward to for next school year Post their answer in chart paper / white board when you return from break.
2:35 – 3:10 Mapping our work for the week: Kapono Ciotti Thinking about the article we just read, take a short 10 minute walk around the MPI campus and look for special features you might use, if you teacher or did teach here that you may use as a site for PBL. What site is it? What class / topic might you connect that site to? How might you use that site to create an ‘excellent’ student learning outcome? Create a map on chart paper.
